Mythical Mother
These pictures were made for a group exhibition of the same name, held virtually by the Spilt Milk Gallery, Edinburgh, in the Fall of 2021. In making these images I consider how mothers have been portrayed in popular iconography and mythology to examine how my mythologies have been influenced by them.
Using myself and my daughters as subjects, I stage pictures that underplay masculine representations of the divine and emphasize the feminine aspect and matrilineal heritage. I construct images in a domestic space where the mother has authority and agency and uses it as a source of strength to foster a strong sense of self in her daughters. In my narrative, girls are center stage, mothering is an empowering act, and care work is foundational to all other work.
